Many studies now estimate that a shocking 80-90 percent of women who discover their unborn child has Down Syndrome (DS) choose to abort. This situation is compounded by the fact that some of the prenatal DS testing is wrong 20-40 percent of the time. A new study is causing controversy over this issue by revealing that many doctors put pressure on women to have an abortion if their baby is found to have Down Syndrome. In the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Brian G. Skotko recorded the following results of his study of women who chose to keep their child:
Skotko's study concluded with the following admonishment: "In fact, with the appropriate sensitivity and explanation, obstetricians can make the births of children with DS celebratory experiences for mothers who choose to continue their pregnancies after receiving prenatal diagnosis."
