Joan Byrum Pro-Life Scholarship
Right to Life of Indianapolis is dedicated to developing passionate pro-life leaders among the students of Marion County and the surrounding counties. Through our direct involvement with high school Teens for Life Clubs, we have seen the enthusiastic dedication of pro-life students.
In our effort to recognize and develop pro-life convictions and leadership among the students in the Indianapolis area, Right to Life of Indianapolis in 2007 began awarding an Annual $1000 Pro-Life Scholarship. In 2008 this scholarship was named in honor of Joan Byrum, President of Right to Life of Indianapolis from 1994-2008, in recognition of her belief in encouraging pro-life activities in youth. The scholarship assists a student who has shown pro-life commitment and involvement during high school and dedication to the pro-life philosophy as they continue their education in college or a vocational program.
Applicants must be seniors graduating from high school (home school graduates are eligible) in the current school year and have applied to a college or a vocational school and then be accepted and enrolled by May 1, 2012. Students are eligible if they live in Marion County or any of it contiguous counties.

The deadline for the 2012 Collegiate Scholarship is April 1, 2012.
Congratulations to our 2010 Joan Byrum Pro-Life Scholarship Winner:

Brandon Douglas
Brandon Douglas graduated from Scecina MemorialHigh School. He began to be involved in pro-life activities through the pro-life group at St. Michael Church in Greenfield and has attended the March for Life in Washington, D.C. since going for the first when he was at St.Michael Elementary School.
Brandon
has demonstrated outstanding commitment in his dedication to all pro-life causes throughout his years at Scecina Memorial High School. In October of his sophomore year he was the only one who participated in Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity at Scecina. Brandon’s leadership and influence have been instrumental in the increase in student involvement in this event and in the activities and membership of the pro-life club at Scecina. He has served as President of the group, often called the “Fan Club for Life” during his junior and senior years. In a recommendation, a Scecina teacher writes that “Brandon is especially committed to educating his peers (particularly classmates) on pro-life issues, especially abortion”.
In November of 2009, Brandon enthusiastically hosted along with club members and sponsors the Right to Life of Indianapolis Teens for Life Forum for a large group of students from many public and Catholic high schools from
Indianapolis
and suburbs
.
He shares his excitement that in 2009-2010 Scecina had a full table of students at the RTLI Celebrate Life Dinner and he helped organize and lead an entire bus of students to the March for Life in Washington, D.C.
Brandon
feels that with the pro-life club officers elected at Scecina, "the foundation has been laid for the development of next year’s program” of pro-life activities. He will continue his education at Albion College in Albion, Michigan and plans to continue his involvement in defending the right to life.
